With some confusion, incoming class receives housing assignments early

The incoming class of 2016 received their final housing assignments yesterday for the 2012-13 school year. Whitman's housing assignments are typically announced later in the summer, around the first week of August. However, the Residence Life and Housing Office discovered that preliminary housing assignments had been posted on my.whitman.edu, a new portal site for the college. Because this information was available, Director of Residence Life and Housing Nancy Tavelli said that her office decided to release final results earlier.

White Bread: Aaron Bobrow-Strain talks food politics

After five years of work, Associate Professor of Politics Aaron Bobrow-Strain has published a book entitled White Bread: A Social History of the Store-Bought Loaf. Published on March 6, 2012, the book has been selected as one of Amazon.com’s Best Books for March 2012, and was featured on NPR. It’s currently available in the Whitman Bookstore. Bobrow-Strain spoke with the Pioneer about the book and the current alternative food movement in the United States.

Rep. Maureen Walsh addresses marriage equality in lecture

Walsh spoke to the Whitman community on the evening of Wednesday, March 28.Her lecture addressed the state of politics in Olympia, as well as her personal support for same-sex marriage. As a member of the Republican caucus, Walsh was one of the few in her party to vote for marriage equality in Washington State, a move which drew criticism from some of her constituents. Walsh said that in 2009, voters in her district voted 71 percent in favor of repealing domestic partnership benefits for same-sex couples.
