Whitties react to the Washington legislature passing same sex marriage

The Washington State House of Representatives voted 55 to 43 on Wednesday, February 7 to allow same sex marriages. This, following the senate voting in favor of same sex marriage last week and Gov. Gregoire's pledge to sign the bill, makes Washington poised to be the seventh U.S. state, in addition to Washington, D.C., to allow same sex marriages. Washington could begin offering same sex marriages 90 days after the governor signs the bill into law. Whitman College students react to the news.

Faculty votes to split RMS into 2 departments

The faculty voted Wednesday, Jan. 25 to split the Rhetoric and Media Studies Department into two new departments with three majors. Film and media studies will be a new interdisciplinary major with two dedicated faculty members, plus film courses in other departments. The new Rhetoric Studies Department will feature a rhetoric studies major and a political and legal rhetoric major. Both departments will also offer a minor.

Students with Asperger’s face challenges

There are no official numbers on Whitman students with Asperger's, though Director of Academic Resources Juli Dunn said she works with "a small handful." For Whitman students with Asperger's, their differences affect their experiences both in the classroom and in Whitman's broader social sphere. The Pioneer talked with two Whitties with Asperger's, both of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not out publicly as individuals with Asperger's. Both students are identified by pseudonyms of their choice.

Report shows decrease in crime on campus

Whitman was a safer place in 2010 than 2009 according to the college's Annual Security Report released Thursday, Sept. 29. The report, federally mandated by the Clery Act of 1990, noted that incidents of robbery, burglary and forcible sex offenses at Whitman decreased from the previous year.
